What's a 3Block group?
A small, hyperlocal group. Think of your block or neighborhood, not your whole town or city. A few things make a group work:
- It's built on something real. A shared interest, identity, or activity: book club, running crew, game night, knitting circle, language exchange. It's not a block party or tenant association (great as those are). The shared thread is the glue, and living nearby just makes showing up easy.
- They meet regularly. Monthly, weekly, whatever fits, but consistently. Showing up is what turns acquaintances into a real group with real connections.
- They give back now and then. These don't have to be arduous. A book club may run a quarterly book drive; a running crew a monthly park cleanup. We won't police this early on (just getting together matters), but we've found a shared purpose gives a group real staying power.
- Organizers won't be alone. We give you a first-gathering playbook, tools to find members, and ideas for giving back. And we'll connect you with other 3Block organizers to share practices.
- Organizers can get a little seed money. Microgrants of $50 to $250 to help you launch, with more available for groups that stay active and do good work in their communities.
We believe real neighborhood ties are good for our neighborhoods, our towns, and our country. Strong local connections make people more invested where they live, and give them a network to lean on when it counts.
We're launching in Brooklyn and looking for a handful of pioneers to help us build this the right way and prove that real community starts local. If that's you, we'd love to have you. Answer a few questions below.
We're picking 10 organizers to kick this off, and will reach out by the end of July to schedule informal interviews. Any questions, feel free to email peter@3block.org.
